Meet Sue

What is your role and when did you start volunteering?
I am an assistant tutor and starting working with CoS in June 2019.

What City of Sanctuary project(s) do you support?
I support the ESOL (English) project and assist the tutor in the English Beginners’ class.

What do you enjoy most about your work with CoS?
I like getting to know the students and it’s very rewarding helping them to understand the English they are trying to grasp.

How does the work you do and your project offer essential support for the asylum seeker and refugee community?
The continuity is very important and as we meet every week (on Zoom over the last year) and now in person.  The students get to know us and respond to a familiar face and smile.  It’s very good when they recognise me in the street and want a chat.

Is there anything else you can tell us about yourself and your work with CoS?
ESOL teaching is new to me, only having worked a little with TEFL a long time ago, so the classes are a learning curve, but very rewarding.
